What is a GOOD, free reliable Anti-Virus program?

Would like to know if there are any good, reliale free anti-virus programs on the net. Someone recommended AVG to me, and said it was free - but do I have to pay "after a certain amount of time"?

AVG is the best free Anti-Virus program out there right now, in my opinion. No there is no paying involved as long as you get the free version. If you use it combination with zone alarm (free too) you should have a pretty safe computer in terms of attacks from the outside.

I stopped using AVG several years back in favor of a free virus scanner called Antivir. I just find that compared to AVG, antivir is much more reliable.
There is AVG and FREE AVG. Make sure when you look for it on google that you use the word free. You don't have to pay for it at all. It's free! Of course, the one you pay for is better because it removes viruses I believe much easier, but if your point is to stop them in the first place, free avg works.
If you stick with the Free Version then it is free! I and a few colleagues have been using it for several years and it has proved effective and reliable. In tests against expensive anti-virus programs it has performed well. And the beauty of it is that you don't have to worry about remembering to update - it is done automatically. The package is easy to understand and to use, too. So far it has saved me from three virus attacks and I found dealing with the virus very easy using AVG's 'virus vault' facility. It certifies incoming and outgoing e-mails, too, so that you and your e-mail recipients can be sure that no viruses are being received or transmitted. I have no hesitation in recommending it as an effective free program. (I'm nothing to do with AVG by the way!)
