You should be able to go into the anti-virus software and disable or remove that exception and then force a re-scan. Usually when you allow that causes the software to remember that action, and it's usually saved in an exceptions area of the software. Find that exception and remove it, then force a manual scan of your machine.

Don't use two anti-virus programs on your computer at once as that has been know you cause problems. Get rid of one of the programs and just stick with one (I recommend sticking with AVG. I use it and it has preformed better that Norton, Trend Micro, etc.)

Also, with spyware scanners, pop-up blockers, etc., it's safe to have more that one of each on your computer. In fact, it's a good idea, as having more that one increases you chances of dectecting spyware and all that junk. Last week i got rid of my norton internet security 07, as i havent been happy with it for a while now, i purchased one called securtiy shield 2008 and after its first scan it found 82 trojans and viruses hiding in the system restore information folder (which said it was empty), has anyone else heard of or tried this anti virus before and what do you think.

No, %26 I suspect because it's pay as you go it will continue to find lots %26 lots of reasons for you to keep paying for it.

AVG is free. %26 you can get a second opinion by using the free scan %26 removal online tool at trendmicro.com called housecall. I have been using avg for yrs %26 never had a problem.

Between them they have kept my 2 computers completely free of malware.

All of the above have a very good, solid reputation in computer magazine reviews.

As you can see, I scan with more than one anti-spyware. No one anti-spyware is 100% all of the time.

I do Internet banking, so am very careful about security - paranoid? - probably.

Yes, if you were a SBC Yahoo customer it came with it free. I have been on cable now for a year or so and my stuff is still working on my computer. It does show that the antivirus is not running but when i do a check it works.

If you want to keep Norton (others have suggested going with other products), I'd suggest upgrading to the latest version (2007). You'll have lost out on the latest technology in virus protection by sticking with 2005. You can get 2007 with rebates for anywhere from free to $30 or so.

If you really want to stick with 2005, then contact Symantec and tell them you misplaced the sleeve.
norton isn't really any good anyways. you'd have to pay for the key if you wanted to use it. if you plan on paying for it, first goto the prevx web site and try out their program. it is the best around and is the full version evn during the trial time and fixes problems before you have to pay for it...

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Ad aware is nice but not enough to use by itself. I agree that most anti-virus suites slow down a PC but if you clean out the registry, defrag it and clean out the cookies and spyware you'll notice an improvement. These are the result of spyware. Even a good antivirus program cannot get rid of them.

Download, install, and update some spyware protection, from download.com. I use Ad-Aware and Spybot; others will suggest other spyware protection programs and any decent one(s) will do.

Then turn off your system restore (in XP: right-click My Computer, choose Properties, then System Restore tab) and restart in Safe mode (F8 while restarting).

Run full-system scans, anti-virus and spyware.

Restart your computer. If problems are gone, turn System Restore back on.
I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S%26D (they鈥檙e free), install them, update them and run them. If they don't seem to be able to get rid of everything they report finding, try running them again, this time in Safe Mode. Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.

2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key

3.Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.

4.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. You may have to log in as Administrator to delete the bad files.

5.When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Update and run both regularly, along with a good anti-virus package.

Actually, you do not have to search anything. When you install an Anti-virus program, it will tell you (i.e. Norton Internet Security, etc) was detected, this ''program'' must be removed.... Cancel setup at this point and remove the ''program''. Then install the new Anti-virus program.

If you have trouble removing Norton, Google ''Norton Removal Tool'' and run that.

I don't recommend AVAST but if you like it fine it looks like a music player, I've had problems with the interface skin not loading,

What is/are the best free anti-virus/spam/pop-up download(s)?

After accidentally clicking on a side banner of a website the other day, we have been boarded with pop-ups and unwanted CRAP that just will NOT go away. It is slowing down our computer and our internet considerably. It interferes with anything and everything we try to do online. CONSTANT full-page pop-ups, and most are for anti-virus and pop-up blockers! Sometimes when we're not even using the internet (we are always logged-on with our internet service).

I've already downloaded the free version of the AVG program, as well as the Yahoo! toolbar anti-spy. AVG didn't help much, although it did find and get rid of about 10 Trojan files (I have no idea what those are...)

It is great and it also uses less memory than Norton. I stopped using Norton and Use AVG. It's a good choice. The virus signatures are updated daily so you will be protected well. I've been using the free version for about a year now and am virus free.

Uninstall Norton Antivirus and reboot the PC before loading AVG.

I also use Microsofts free spyware preventer. It is in beta. Load this program, too.

I had this same thing happen to me! A yellow trianlge keeps popping up with and exclamation sign in it. I ran my virus scan and I didnt have any viruses. I couldnt figure out how to get rid of it until I noticed the box come up when i was restarting the computer and it had the name of the program that was causing the window to come up and say I had a virus. Its actually a program that installs and makes you think you have a virus so that you need to install their software but its not a virus! try and log off and watch what the file is called then go in and search it then delete it. I was never so happy to get rid of it. I hope this helps you!

Depending on the version of the (NAV) presuming Norton Anti-Virus you have there is sometimes a public and a private key remaining after in installation this is usually the case if it was a version that had the ability to work on a network...

Once you un-installed the program it looks to have changed the permissions on it.

The answer to your question will differ from person to person as they will tell you that the one they use is the best, but that is there personal preference.

From my experience , antivirus and anti spy ware is only as good as its data base, it does not matter, which one it is, if it has not got the virus in its data base then it will not pick up that particular virus,

There are thousands of wild viruses out there; your guess to how many is as good as mine. So I think in picking any antivirus and antispyware, is down to personal choice and which one you are happy with.

I have tried out most of them, paid and free versions and they all have their good points and their bad points. The two that I would not recommend, from my experience with them are Norton and Mcafee.

My experience with Norton was that it slowed my pc down that it was like having a virus installed, and Mcafee would not work for me. I have tried True Sword, did not think much of it gets rid of 3 viruses and then you have to buy it to remove the rest. That did not impress me.

Ones that I would recommend are AVG, ZONE ALARM, + OTHERS

Avg is good but it is best not to use a free anti-virus because most don't update with the lastest viruses and worms coming out. Best to purchase some software or get a subscription. I recommend Mcafee because it checks for viruses and it also checks for spyware. A year is like $40+ dollars and to renew is 19.95 for the next year.

It really is best not to have more than one anti-virus also. Keep just one because there will be some issues with one if you run the other. They will often conflict with each other.

I have it and have never had it pop up and tell me anything. I believe it only scans. I use Zone Alarm firewall and this does that. It's free as well so install both (sorry I don't know the website).

A wise decision on uninstalling Norton, I had Norton and became seriously infected, because Norton didn't recognize the viruses.I am now Virus free, will give a list of my protection, most is freeware. Unfortunately there is no complete ''all-in-one'' cd. But I could name you off a few programs to help you out.

You need a firewall for security purposes, (hackers, live threats, etc), for this I recommend ZoneAlarm Pro, you can find it at download.com

Secondly, you need something to check for spyware/adware, download Spybot (also found on download.com).

A registry cleaner always comes in handy, I recommend Registry Cleaner 7, (found at download.com).
