NOD32 doesn't slowdown your computer as much as the others and is as effective if not more effective. You should upgrade virus definitions as often as the software releases them, but you only need to upgrade the actual software every 2-3 years.

I have a dell, and I didn't go with any of those. I have Avast. Its free and works fine. It even updates itself. Another good one is AVG, also free.
AVG for anti-virus and Ad-Aware for anti-spyware. trend micro and norton has brand recognition but aren't actually *that* good. AVG and Ad-Aware are free as well no subscription fees...
